My Gramma always used to say “Keep looking up!” In times of trouble, it’s proven to be good advice. But occasionally, it pays to keep looking down.
One afternoon, I was wandering around uninspired in an American city that seemed to have a crazy amount of gum on the sidewalks. I decided to take pictures of the pink, gray, green and black splotches hoping that, in some counter-intuitive way, the practice would lead me to something more meaningful.
After a block or so of this hang-dog assignment, I found this sidewalk graffiti. The idea of someone stopping to write this small joyful inscription in new concrete just tickled me.  I immediately gave up the Rorschach-gum-splotch project and kept looking up.

  1. You just sent some joy my way. Thanks!

  2. Have been thinking lately about Gramma’s “keep looking up” and so it was funny to have a peek at your blog and find this… lovely. Kath xo

  3. There could be a whole project in capturing the images and words that get captured in wet cement. If this one was in my neighbourhood, I think I’d make it a part of my route as often as possible and search it out every time for the little lift it would give.
